Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is the induction of the natural state of trance, an altered state of awareness. The very normal state of internal focus that we go into several times a day, a little like day dreaming, being engrossed in a book or television, or driving a familiar route, yet not remembering the journey. During hypnosis the body and conscious mind become very relaxed and the sub-conscious or unconscious mind is then more receptive to beneficial suggestions.

What is hypnotherapy?

This is when the relaxing state of hypnosis is used therapeutically, to alter unwanted or limiting thoughts and patterns of behaviour and replace or change them for more beneficial ones. Hypnotherapy helps you train your sub-conscious to make the changes that you have consciously chosen. It is believed that as much as 90% of our behaviour is controlled by our subconscious mind, which is why hypnotherapy can be so effective at circumventing the conscious mind and the barriers it may put up.

What is the subconscious mind?

The subconscious or unconscious part of our mind that controls our automatic functions, like breathing and the heart pumping. It also learns patterns of actions which it then performs automatically. This is how habits, good or bad are begin. During trance the subconscious mind is more accessible which helps us to find the underlying causes for a habit or problem. Once this is understood the subconscious can learn new behaviours and bring about positive change.

What can hypnotherapy be used for?

It is very useful in improving performance and creativity in many aspects of life. It is a most effective method of treating problems and resolving issues that have a psychological base, such as stress, lack of self confidence, unwanted feelings, fears and phobias, diminishing pain, weight management and smoking cessation. It can help you to be more content and change your life for the better. Whilst not a panacea, its uses are as many and varied as its successful clients who have benefited from hypnotherapy.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, we all do it normally however to induce hypnosis the client must be quite willing and fully co-operate. You can't be hypnotised against your will.

Will I feel hypnotised ?

There is no such thing as a hypnotised feeling. Some people experience a deep level of trance, whilst others feel extremely alert. You will remain aware of everything around you, although you may not remember it all at the time. We're all individuals and therefore experience hypnosis differently.

Could I be made to do silly things like I've seen on TV ?

No, certainly not. The people you see on TV have been selected for their willingness to perform. We will treat you with consideration and respect and use our skill and professional integrity to offer you the most suitable solution to your problem. At all times you remain in control and can't be manipulated to do anything outside of your normal morals or beliefs. Mutual trust and good rapport between client and therapist is the key to good hypnotherapy.

Could I get stuck in a trance?

No, you can come out of hypnosis or trance any time you wish. All hypnosis is self hypnosis, therefore you could terminate the session whenever you wish. However this deeply relaxed state is so pleasant and comfortable that clients are often reluctant to return to the ‘here and now’ for many this is the first time they have experienced this level of peace and relaxation in years.

What is NLP? Neurolinguistic programming

Neuro, mind, thoughts, how we think. Linguistic, language and communication. Programming, how the interplay of thought and language affects the way we behave and act. It is literally how we see, hear and feel our experiences. By learning how to change the way we think, we can transform and improve our lives.

What is CBT? Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

It places emphasis on the present to overcome negative issues of the past. Clients are encouraged to find and use better alternatives to their current problematic thought processes, by implementing these more realistic and healthy choices they reformulate their beliefs and understandings. CBT-hypnotherapy can result in rapid, positive and permanent changes in all areas of life.

What is EFT? Emotional Freedom Technique

This works on a similar principle to acupuncture. Instead of needles it uses a tapping routine on the acupressure points to re-balance the body and unblock energy fields. We use it in conjunction with other therapies for an all encompassing approach.
